"Can a scrappy indie theater in fly-over country deliver the same experience as watching a big musical on Broadway?
The answer is: Of course not. But as far as I’m concerned, at least in the case of Stray Cat Theatre’s rendition of “American Idiot,” that’s a good thing. Maybe even a great thing.
As a theater lover (forget as a critic), what I’m hoping for more than anything when the house lights go down is to be surprised. And surprise is what director Ron May and his cast — abetted by some strikingly expressionistic choreography by Lisa Starry of Scorpius Dance Theatre — deliver in a propulsive and poignant production. It isn’t just a fading Xerox of the original but a vibrantly original interpretation."
